Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture remains a critical sector in Nigeria’s economy, providing employment, food security, and export revenue. In Kebbe Local Government Area, Sokoto State, rice farming is a dominant agricultural activity, contributing significantly to the livelihoods of local farmers and the broader economy. However, the potential of rice farming in this area remains underutilized due to limited awareness, market access, and recognition of local farming practices. Photography, as a visual communication tool, offers a unique opportunity to promote local rice farming by documenting and showcasing the processes, challenges, and successes of farmers. According to Abdullahi and Umar (2023), visual storytelling through photography can connect farmers to broader audiences, attract investment, and encourage policy support. This study examines how photography can serve as a tool for promoting local rice farming in Kebbe, focusing on its role in enhancing visibility and advocacy for the sector.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of rice farming in Kebbe Local Government Area, local farmers face challenges such as limited market access, inadequate infrastructure, and low recognition of their efforts. The lack of effective promotional strategies exacerbates these issues, leaving farmers disconnected from potential markets and support systems. Photography, with its ability to visually capture and communicate the value of local farming practices, remains underexplored as a tool for advocacy and promotion in this context. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the role of photography in promoting local rice farming in Kebbe.
